What you are trying to accomplish

The objective is the enemy Patron, reached by progressing through lane and base defenses. A fight is useful when it creates room to farm, shop or push. Chasing kills while your own lanes collapse can lose that opportunity even when the scoreboard looks good.

The City Never Sleeps map has three main lanes and side districts. Use the minimap and lane labels to identify your assignment rather than following a route from an old four-lane map.

Your first lane

  1. Reach your assigned lane, stay near the wave and use cover. Learn your weapon and one reliable ability before forcing a long chase.
  2. Farm troopers and secure the souls that appear. Flying soul orbs and ground pickups are different interactions: shoot an orb you can secure or deny; collect a reachable friendly pickup without stepping into a losing trade. Do not assume an old last-hit tutorial describes every current pickup rule.
  3. Watch nearby allies and enemies before going for extra farm. Nearby soul sharing does not justify abandoning all lanes to crowd one wave.
  4. Buy an early item that fixes the actual problem: firing uptime, recovery, ability damage, or reaching the target. Open Builds for a hero-specific starting plan.

Convert growth into progress

After shopping, return to the wave and use the new strength to create pressure with your team. Clear available Haunts when that will not sacrifice the lane or expose you to a predictable collapse. Tough Crates require a heavy melee; permanent Buff Containers and healing snacks can add value along a safe route. Use these as opportunities, not reasons to ignore the main objective.

When an enemy is absent or your team wins a useful fight, push the lane defenses together. Before entering the base, check your team’s positions and the enemy respawn situation. Destroy the remaining base defenses and finish the Patron phases instead of scattering into individual chases.

Common failures and a practice check

Losing health to collect a small pickup, buying damage you cannot apply, arriving alone at an objective, and treating a kill as the match objective all break the loop. If you keep dying at the same point, review what prevented you from acting before changing the whole build.

In Sandbox, repeat a short weapon-and-ability sequence against a dummy and read the Damage Events. Then practice one exchange that lets you return to cover. A useful first-match goal is to repeat farm → purchase → pressure while recognizing when to leave a fight. This is a learning plan rather than a timed map route or a guaranteed strategy.
